About Me
Kia ora koutou
Thanks so much for taking the time to visit my site and explore my work. I hope you’ve enjoyed some of the images and perhaps found a moment or two that made you stop and look twice.
I’m a photographer with a passion for documentary and reportage-style work — capturing real, unrepeatable moments as they happen. Most of my work is in dynamic, fast-moving settings like sport and live music, where the challenge (and the joy) lies in anticipating and preserving the split-second details that tell the bigger story. I’ve been fortunate to work with Sport NZ, High Performance Sport NZ, Northern Mystics, Chamber Music New Zealand, and the Auckland Philharmonia, among others.
Before moving to Aotearoa New Zealand, I was a music teacher for many years, which gave me a deep empathy for people and a love for hearing their stories. I bring that same sensitivity into my photography — whether I’m courtside at a netball game, backstage at a concert, or on location for something entirely different.
Since graduating from the Photography Institute in 2020 with a diploma in Professional Photography, I’ve worked on a wide range of projects, from documenting elite sport to capturing New Zealand’s unique birdlife, and creating imagery for organisations such as New Zealand Premium Foods, the Department of Conservation, and the Rangitoto Island Historic Conservation Trust.
While sport and music are my mainstay, I’m always open to new challenges and bespoke commissions. If you’ve got a story to tell, whether big, small, fast-paced, or quietly unfolding, I’d love to help you bring it to life.
Hei konā,
Tom
Costs
All projects are unique and so it is very difficult to give a pricing list on a website. I am generally happy to work within your budgetary scope so please contact me to discuss.
Gear
As a 10 year old I was gifted an Olympus point and shoot film camera, but this disappeared following a family holiday. However, it lit the fire of interest in photography. Years later I started taking photography more seriously on an early mirrorless from Samsung the NX10. This was a great way to experiment with imagery and I used many vintage lenses with an adapter with this camera.

The Samsung NX series was ahead of its time in terms of camera development and the mirrorless concept and I wanted something quicker and more reliable. Encouraged by a photographer I knew I invested in a DSLR. I then went between several Canon cameras including 750D and the 7D Mkii. Then in December 2019 things changed again and a chance encounter with a camera salesman in Auckland led me to the Fuji System that I now use and back to mirrorless cameras where it all began. You can read about this in more detail on the Fujilove Magazine article I wrote on the topic.
So I am now a very happy Fujifilm shooter with the following gear:
Fujifilm XT5 & Fujifilm XPro3, 23mm f2, 16mm f1.4, 90mm f2, 50-140mm f2.8, and 56mm f1.2
I also keep a film camera handy for trying film stocks and general fun, currently using an Olympus OM1 with a 50mm F1.4!
